Guatemalan Shucos Recipe
Shucos are a Guatemalan twist on the classic hot dog, a popular street food enjoyed throughout the country, especially after a night out in the city. Loved by both locals and tourists, shucos come with a wide variety of toppings, featuring local and indigenous ingredients as well as international flavors.
Ingredients
- Hot dog sausages – 4
- Hot dog buns – 4
- Cabbage (shredded) – 1 cup
- Carrots (shredded) – 1/2 cup
- Red onion (thinly sliceD) – 1/4 cup
- Tomato (diced) – 1
- Avocado (sliced) – 1
- Mayonnaise – 1/4 cup
- Mustard – 2 tbsp
- Hot sauce – to taste
- Salt and pepper – to taste
- Vegetable oil – for grilling
Instructions
- Preheat your grill or grill pan over medium heat.
- Grill the hot dog sausages until cooked through and slightly charred, about 5-7 minutes.
- In a bowl, combine shredded cabbage, shredded carrots, thinly sliced red onion, diced tomato, and sliced avocado. Toss with mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, hot sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Grill the hot dog buns until lightly toasted.
- Place a grilled hot dog sausage in each bun.
- Top the hot dogs with the prepared cabbage slaw mixture.
- Serve hot, with additional hot sauce and condiments on the side.
