
Mumbai Masala Toastie
Mumbai Masala Toastie is a popular street food made with spicy mashed potato filling, layered between slices of buttered bread, along with green chutney, onions, tomatoes, and sometimes cheese. It's then toasted until golden and crispy in a sandwich toaster. Served hot with extra chutney or ketchup, this flavorful toastie is a crunchy, spicy, and satisfying snack loved across Mumbai.
Ingredients
For Potato Masala
- Oil – 3 tbsp
- Heeng – ¼ tsp
- Cumin – 1tsp
- Mustard – 1tsp
- Ginger chopped – 1tsp
- Green chilli chopped – 1no
- Turmeric – ½ tsp
- Curry leaves – a sprig
- Potatoes (boiled & mashed) – 1½ cups
- Coriander chopped – handful
- Salt
For Chutney
- Coriander leaves – 2cups
- Mint leaves – 1cup
- Garlic cloves – 2no
- Ginger – a small piece
- Green chilli – 1-2nos
- Salt
- Black salt – to taste
- Roasted cumin – 2tsp
- Lemon juice – 2 tbsp
- Ice cubes – few
- Water – a dash (if required)
- Chaat masala – 2tsp
For assembling the sandwich
- Jumbo Bread Slices – 4nos
- Butter – 2tbsp
- Onion roundels – few
- Tomato roundels – few
- Capsicum roundels – few
- Salt – to taste
- Chaat masala – a generous pinch
- Cheese grated – handful
- Sev – handful
Instructions
- Heat oil and add Heeng, cumin and mustard seeds. Once they splutter and ginger and green chilli chopped. Sauté and add turmeric, curry leaves and give it a stir. Add potatoes lightly crushed and mix it well. Cook for 3mins and add salt and coriander chopped. Remove and keep aside to cool.
- For chutney mix all the ingredients and grind it to a paste. Remove and keep aside.
- Smear butter on to one of the sides of the bread. Keep the buttered side down and smear some chutney on to the insides of all the bread. Now place some potato, sliced onion, tomato, capsicum and sprinkle chaat masala.
- Cover it with the other slice of bread. And now grill it, remove and sprinkle some Sev on top. Serve with some mint chutney and ketchup.
