Kappa Biriyani (Tapioca Biryani)
Kappa Biriyani, also known as Irachi Kappa or Ellum Kappayum, is an absolute must-try Kerala delicacy that promises a feast for the senses with its delightful medley of flavors. This wholesome meal brings together Kappa (tapioca) and Beef in a flavorful harmony, creating a beloved combination of spicy Beef and Tapioca cherished by non-vegetarians throughout Kerala. Particularly renowned in Central Kerala, in regions like Kottayam and Idukki, Kappa Biriyani holds a special place alongside other favorites such as Chenda Kappa, Chakka Kuzhachathu, and Kappa vevichathu with beef roast or red fish curry. Thrissur style Kappa Ularthiyathu stands out as another exquisite Kappa delicacy. While recipes may vary across regions, the end result is consistently delectable, as the Beef-Kappa Combo remains a memorable treat. Tapioca is also known by various names like Cassava, Yuca, Kappa, Kollikizhangu, Maracheeni, among others.
Ingredients
- 1/2 kg Beef (cut into medium size pieces)
- 1 med – big Onion
- 1 tbsp each Crushed ginger & garlic
- 1 tbsp Chilli powder
- 1 tbsp Coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Pepper powder
- 1 tsp Garam Masala
- 2 tsp Vinegar
- 1/2 kg Kappa (cassava)
- 1 cup Grated coconut
- 1 tsp Chilli powder
- 1 tsp Coriander powder
- 5 -6 Small / Pearl onion
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- Salt
- Oil – I used coconut oil
- Curry leaves
Instructions
- Cook tapioca with salt till it becomes soft. Mash tapioca & keep it aside.
- Marinate the cleaned beef with onion, ginger garlic, masala powders, vinegar & salt. Cook the marinated beef till it becomes tender. Add the mashed tapioca to beef & mix well.
- Meanwhile fry scraped coconut with chilli powder & coriander powder till it becomes golden brown (keep aside 2 tsp of coconut for garnishing). Grind it. Add ground coconut mix to beef & tapioca & mix well.
- Heat oil in a pan & splutter mustard seed. Add small onion & saute for 3-4 minutes. Add beef tapioca mix & stir for 4-5 minutes. Garnish with curry leaves & fried coconut.
