Italian Spritz Veneziano (Aperol Spritz) Recipe
Spritz is believed to have originated during the Habsburg rule in Veneto in the 1800s, under the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia. During this time, soldiers, merchants, diplomats, and employees of the Habsburg Empire became accustomed to drinking local wine in the taverns. However, they were unfamiliar with the region’s wide variety of wines, and the alcohol content was stronger than they were used to. As a result, they asked local hosts to spritzen (the German word for "sprinkle") a bit of water into the wine to lighten it. The original spritz was made with sparkling white or red wine diluted with fresh water. Today, a Spritz Veneziano, also known as an Aperol, spritz, is a popular wine-based cocktail typically consumed in Northeast Italy.
Ingredients
- Aperol – 4 tbsp
- Prosecco (or other sparkling wine) – 6 tbsp
