Ingredients
- 1/2 cup hesaru kaalu or mung bean or green gram
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds or jeera
- 2 – 4 cloves garlic finely chopped or 1/2 tsp ginger garlic paste
- 1 – 2 green chili
- 4 – 5 curry leaves
- 1 big onion chopped
- 2 tomatoes chopped
- 2 pinch of turmeric powder
- 1 tsp pav bhaji masala or 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder (add only if masala powder doesn't contain red chili)
- 1 tsp jaggery (optional, I didn't use)
- 1 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
- Salt as per your taste
Instructions
- Rinse and pressure cook hesaru kaalu or green gram until soft by adding a pinch of turmeric powder, little salt and required water. You can soak them for 4 – 5 hours for fast cooking. Or you can even use green gram sprouts.
- Now in a deep frying pan prepare tempering using 2 tbsp oil, 1/2 tsp mustard and 1/2 tsp cumin seeds.
- When the mustard seed splutters add in slit green chili, 1/2 tsp ginger garlic paste (or finely chopped garlic), curry leaves, finely chopped onion, pinch of turmeric powder and fry until onions are soft.
- Add in chopped tomato and salt. Fry until tomatoes are soft.
- Add in cooked green gram or mung beans along with the cooked water and give a quick mix.
- Add in pav bhaji or garam masala powder. Please note I didn't add extra red chili powder as my pav bhaji masala has red chili in it. If you want to add jaggery add it now. Adjust the salt and add the water as per your desired consistency.
- Mix well and bring it to boil. add in chopped coriander leaves and switch off the stove. Serve it with chapathi or roti.
