French 75
The inception of the authentic French 75 cocktail occurred at Harry's New York Bar in Paris, France, amidst World War I. The initial rendition possessed a robust potency reminiscent of the French 75 mm artillery gun. The variation presented here employs a reduced gin content.
Ingredients
- Coarse sugar
- Ice cubes
- 3/4 ounce gin
- 1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 3 ounces chilled champagne
Instructions
- 1. Sprinkle a thin layer of sugar on a plate. Moisten the rim of a chilled champagne flute with water; hold glass upside down and dip rim into sugar.
- 2. Fill a shaker three-fourths full with ice. Add gin, confectioners' sugar and lemon juice; cover and shake until condensation forms on outside of shaker, 10-15 seconds. Strain into prepared flute; top with champagne.
