South African Bobotie Recipe
This dish combines African, Asian, and European ingredients, flavors, and cooking techniques, reflecting both the history and culture of the country. Often regarded as South Africa's favorite dish, it is commonly served at family gatherings, parties, and small celebrations.
Ingredients
- 1 lb Ground beef or lamb
- 1 Onion (finely chopped)
- 2 Bread slices (soaked in milk)
- 2 tbsp Curry powder
- 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
- 2 tbsp Chutney
- 1/4 cup Raisins
- 1/4 cup Almonds (slivered)
- 1 tbsp Lemon juice
- 1 Egg
- 1/2 cup Milk
- Salt and pepper – to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, sauté the chopped onion until soft. Add the minced garlic and curry powder, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the ground meat to the skillet, cooking until browned. Season with salt and pepper.
- Squeeze out the excess milk from the soaked bread and add the bread to the meat mixture, stirring to combine.
- Stir in the chutney, raisins, almonds, and lemon juice. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Pour over the meat mixture in the baking dish.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the topping is set and golden brown.
- Serve the Bobotie hot, accompanied by yellow rice and chutney
