Japanese Champon Recipe
Unlike many ramen dishes, Champon is prepared in a single pot, with the noodles cooked directly in the broth. Originally popular among students in the Nagasaki region seeking an affordable, filling meal, Champon has since become widely enjoyed.The main ingredients vary by season and region, giving each version of the dish a unique flavor. Champon is a prime example of Chinese-Japanese fusion cuisine and can be found across the country.
Ingredients
- 4 oz Pork belly (sliced thin)
- 4 oz Shrimp (peeled and deveined)
- 4 oz Squid (cleaned and sliced)
- 4 oz Fish cakes (sliced)
- 1 cup Napa cabbage (chopped)
- 1 Carrot (sliced)
- 2 Green onions (chopped)
- 1 cup Bean sprouts
- 2 servings Ramen noodles
- 4 cups Chicken or pork broth
- 2 tbsp Soy sauce
- 2 tbsp Sake
- 2 tbsp Vegetable oil
- Salt and pepper – to taste
Instructions
- Heat vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add pork belly and cook until browned.
- Add shrimp, squid, and fish cakes, and cook until seafood is just done.
- Stir in napa cabbage, carrot, green onions, and bean sprouts. Cook until vegetables are tender.
- Add chicken or pork broth, soy sauce, and sake. Bring to a simmer.
- Add ramen noodles and cook until noodles are tender.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve hot, garnished with extra green onions if desired.
