Ingredients
- 1 medium sized sorekai or bottle gourd
- 1/4 cup moong dal or hesarubele
- 1 tsp urad dal
- 1 – 2 tbsp cooking oil
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 red chili
- 1 – 2 green chillies
- A big pinch of turmeric powder
- A big pinch of asafoetida
- 4-5 curry leaves
- 1/4 cup grated coconut
- Salt as per your taste
- 1 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
Instructions
- Soak moong dal (hesaru bele) for 10 minutes.
- Wash, peel and chop the bottle gourd. If the seeds are hard then discard them.
- Next heat oil in a frying pan. Add in 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp urad dal and 1 red chilli.
- Wait until mustard seeds splutter. Add in slit green chilli and curry leaves.
- Next add in chopped bottle gourd. Give a quick mix.
- Also add in soaked moong dal and give a quick mix.
- Add in turmeric powder, asafoetida and salt.
- Add 1/4 cup of water and bring it to boil.
- Close the lid and cook until soft.
- Stir in between and cook until soft under low flame. Add in grated coconut. Optionally you can add some coriander leaves.
- Give a quick mix. Switch off the stove. Serve it with hot steaming rice or chapathi.
