Cuisine Indian
- Ghee (घी) – 1½ tbsp
- Fresh coconut, grated (ताज़ा नारियल) – 1 cup/150 gms
- Mawa (खोया) – 300 gms/1½ cups
- Sugar (चीनी) – ½ cup
- Cardamom powder (इलाइची पाउडर) – ¾ tsp
- Pista, chopped (पिस्ता) – 2 tbsp
- Almonds, chopped (बादाम) – 2 tbsp
For preparing Coconut Mawa Modak, roughly cut fresh peeled coconut and blend it in a mixer grinder without water to a dry, grainy stage. Heat some ghee in a pan and roast the ground coconut until the grains separate and it looks crumbly.
Then add khoya and cook until it starts melting, then add sugar and cook until the whole mixture binds together. Cool it off on a plate. When the mixture has cooled down, add cardamom powder, chopped almonds, and pistachios, and shape it with a Modak mold.
For those who do not have a mold at home, you can first make small round balls of the mixture and roll them again while keeping the pressure on top to form a triangle. Press the bottom side onto a smooth surface—it closely resembles a modak. For engravings, you can use a toothpick, satay stick, or even a fork and press it sideways. Enjoy Bappa’s favorite Modak with your friends and family!
